Construction Update: Union Station (February 20, 2013)

Constuction continues, but this time of year the pace relies heavily on fair weather. Looks like a lot of progress is being made.

Regional Bus Facility (LRT to DUS Building)
In the interior of the bus facility, crews are continuing the installation of the electrical/mechanical rough-ins, fire protection and lighting. The installation of insulation, drywall, and the metal panels that are the final finishes in the pedestrian concourse are in progress as is the installation of the “store front” glass that separates the pedestrian concourse from the bus loading area. Paving of the sidewalk and bus slips outside of the pedestrian concourse is taking place.  Crews are also working on the stairs, escalators, and elevator from the CRT platforms to the underground bus facility.

Commuter Rail (CRT) and Train Hall
Fabrication of the steel for the commuter rail train hall canopy is occurring off-site.  Erection of the trusses for the south end of the train hall canopy began the week of January 28, 2013. Work on the commuter rail tracks and track turn-outs is in progress.  Additionally, work is continuing on the Amtrak canopy and “tech trusses” (structure on platforms within Train Hall).

Streets and Utilities
The intersection of 16th St. and Wewatta St. is open and pedestrian access is on the sidewalk on the south side of 16th St.  Traffic and pedestrian flow in the area should be much easier, although travelers in the area should be cautious of activity from all of the projects under construction at this intersection.
Pavilions and Plaza
Crews are installing light fixtures in the Chestnut Pavilion and pouring the topping slab and electrical mechanical rough-ins for the Wewatta Pavilion.  Work will begin on the DUS Pavilion, the connection between the historic station building and the train hall this month.

In Wynkoop Plaza, crews are working on the water feature and the granite seat walls. In the Wewatta Plaza, tree trenches, granite seat wall foundations, and light fixtures are being installed.
